Kuna places 2nd at Tri-State
Kuna juniors Casey Cobb (113 pounds) and Michael Cook (126) won tournament titles to help the Kavemen take second place on Saturday at the 64-team Tri-State wrestling tournament in Coeur d'Alene.
Hermiston (Ore.) won the championship with 222 points.
Kuna, the defending 4A state champions, finished with 205 points and seven placers, led by nationally-ranked wrestlers Cobb and Cook.
“They did really good,” Owens said. “Tough competition: Multiple state champions and all-Americans to get there.”
It's more accolades for Cobb, who won last year's 98-pound 4A state title, and Cook, a two-time 4A state champion.
In July, Cobb placed fifth in the freestyle junior classification (Fargo, N.D.) to earn all-American status. It helped solidify his No. 4 national ranking among 106-pound juniors, which was given by USA Wrestling Magazine national editor Dan Fickel.
Cobb, who wrestled in Tri-State's 113-pound bracket, won the title match against Fred Green (Orting High, Wash.) by a 9-4 decision.
Cook, who is ranked 11th by Fickel among 126-pound juniors, beat Blake Beard (Central Valley High, Wash.) by a 3-1 decision.
Cook, who won the 98-pound Greco-Roman Cadet national title in July of 2010, defeated Cruz Velasquez (Tahoma High, Wash.) by a 9-3 decision to reach the final match.
Kuna's Jacoby Peterson (106) placed second. He was pinned at the 2:29 mark of the championship match by Post Falls' Alius Delarosa.
Fourth-place finishes were achieved by Kavemen wrestlers Kurtis Loftis (145) and Austin Silsby (220).
Loftis fell in the third-place match to Ian Steen (Graham Kapowshin High, Wash.) by a 10-2 major decision; Silsby lost to Caleb Johnson (Blaine High, Wash.) by a 7-2 decision.
Kuna 182-pounder Jordan Nolan placed fifth. He defeated Chandler Knight (Colville High, Wash.) by a 3-0 decision.
Kavemen heavyweight JC English placed sixth. He lost his fifth-place match to Kyle Gleed (Decatur, Wash.) by a 4-2 decision.
Centennial wrestlers Tuma, Chavez win titles at Reno Tournament of Champions
Centennial 138-pounder Hayden Tuma and 145-pounder Jon-Jay Chavez each won titles on Saturday at the Reno Tournament of Champions, a 118-team wrestling tournament in Reno, Nev.
Their efforts helped Centennial produce 152 points to finish sixth.
Canon-McMillan (Pa.) won the title with 225.5 points.
Tuma, who's ranked No. 1 among 138-pound juniors by USA Wrestling Magazine national editor Dan Fickel, pinned five of six opponents to win the title.
In the championship match, Tuma pinned Paul Fox (Gilroy High, Calif.) in 3:49.
It's a continuation of Tuma's budding resume. In July, he won the Junior Greco-Roman national championship and placed third in freestyle in Fargo, N.D.
Tuma, who is a two-time 5A state champion, pinned the following wrestlers en route to the Reno semifinals: Matt Provost (Wasatch High, Utah) in 0:45; Tyler Cerny (Alamosa High, Colo.) in 2:42; Kyle Baker (Easton High, Pa.) in 1:06; Tate Sandifer (Ironwood Ridge High, Ariz.) in 0:53.
Tuma is ranked No. 4 nationally by Intermat among all wrestlers in his weight class. Flowrestling ranks him No. 2 nationally.
Chavez, who was ranked ninth in the country among 132-pound juniors by Fickel, defeated Nikko Villarreal (Gilroy High, Calif.) by a 5-1 decision in the 145-pound title match.
Centennial 152-pounder Kris McFarlane placed fifth. He pinned Zack Dawson (Vacaville High, Calif. ) in 2:43.
Columbia wrestling coach Todd Cady said one of the team's “written goals” was to earn a top-10 finish at the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions.
The Wildcats came close: They placed 14th with 102 points.
Placing fifth for Columbia was 182-pounder Austin Schaffer, who owns an honorable-mention national ranking by USA Wrestling Magazine national editor Dan Fickel.
Schaffer, who is a three-time 4A state placer and two-time 4A runner up, defeated Brock Warren (Broken Arrow High, Okla.) by an 8-5 decision.
Placing sixth for Columbia was 195-pounder Tim McDonald. He had to forfeit the fifth-place match because of a potential injury, a precautionary measure by Cady.
Columbia 170-pounder Olin Vickers placed eighth. He lost to Bryce Martin (Bakersfield High, Calif.) by a 3-2 decision in the seventh-place match.
Melba's Johnshoy places 7th
Three-time 2A state champion Jared Johnshoy of Melba High placed seventh at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Johnshoy, who is ranked ninth nationally by Fickel among 145-pound seniors, beat Zack Perry (Green Valley High, Nev.) by a 9-6 decision in the seventh-place match.
